Douglasville police chief suspended pending investigation

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. -- Douglasville Police Chief Chris Womack is no stranger to headlines or hot water.

But Thursday night he suspended in the wake of an arrest he made last March.

There are allegations of excessive use of force stemming from a police chase that ended up in Fulton County.

11Alive has learned that there is dash camera video of the incident that at least some members of the council here didn't know existed until last week - which was after they renewed the chief's employment contract.

That is an issue all by itself that needs clarification.

The accident occurred at the Asphalt Refining and Technology Company on Huey Road Wednesday afternoon. 11Alive's Kevin Rowson said it started when a worker went into cardiac arrest. As he was being helped, a vent was somehow opened, which released hydrogen sulfide gas. One of the workers rendering aid was sprayed in the face by the gas and fell 20 feet off of a platform.

The worker who fell off the platform later died. Three other people were transported to the hospital, including the man who went into cardiac arrest and two others.
