Elana Meyers to visit Scottish Rite

ATLANTA -- Fresh off her silver medal win at the 2014 Winter Olympics, bobsledder Elana Meyers will visit Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite next week.

The pride of Douglasville will stop by the Atlanta children's hospital on Monday, Feb. 24 at 3 p.m.

AJC Peachtree Road Race T-shirt design contest open

ATLANTA -- Calling all artists: the AJC Peachtree Road Race T-shirt design contest is now accepting entries.

Designers have until Friday, Feb. 28 to submit their works of art. All entries will be whittled down to five finalists, which will be unveiled on ajc.com/peachtree on Saturday, Mar. 15.

No one will see the winning design until race day, when it will adorn tens of thousands of finishers' T-shirts.

"The AJC Peachtree Road Race T-shirt design contest is a great way to showcase the work of our local artists, and we are always impressed with the entries we receive," Atlanta Track Club interim executive director Sue Payne said in a statement.

Whoever wins the contest receives $1,000, while each of the four finalists gets $100.

ATLANTA -- Don't be alarmed if you see a whole bunch of people running down Georgia 400 this weekend.

The Pay the Last Toll road race will be held Sunday, Nov. 17 at 8:30 a.m., and gives athletes one last opportunity to see the infamous toll booths before they are demolished.

Runners will begin at the Glenridge Connector in Sandy Springs and run south to Phipps Plaza. When they reach the toll booths, they will throw in their final 50 cents. All proceeds will go to charity.

Northbound lanes of Ga. 400 will be closed for the race from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday.

Georgia Department of Transportation crews will also spend part of the weekend tearing down a MARTA pedestrian bridge on southbound Ga. 400.

Georgians win all divisions of Allstate 13.1

CHAMBLEE, Ga. -- Georgia emerged triumphant in this year's Allstate Life Insurance Atlanta 13.1 Marathon and Hyundai Hope on Wheels 5K.

The races were held Saturday and saw more than 3,600 competitors take to the streets of Brookhaven and Chamblee.

Andrew Carwood won the men's division with a time of 1:17:39. It was the 34-year-old Marietta resident's first win.

"The weather was perfect, the course was tough and the race was extremely well organized," Carwood said after winning. "Being in my mid-thirties now, training and nutrition is extremely important. I owe my wife, Becky, a huge thanks for training with me and keeping me on a solid nutrition plan."

Atlanta resident Jonathan Koch placed second with a time of 1:18:59. Paul Duckett of Dallas, Texas, came in third at 1:19:31.

Family Day to feature marketplace, movie

Family Day to feature marketplace, movie

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. -- This year's Douglasville Family Day will be held Saturday, Sept. 21 in downtown Douglasville.

The fun will include a community marketplace, a petting zoo, a food court, games, pet adoptions from the Douglas County Animal Shelter and $20 flu shots, courtesy of Cobb and Douglas Public Health.

The festival opens at 11:45 a.m. and runs until 6 p.m. At 8 p.m., there will be a free screening of The Croods.

Splash and Dash coming to Douglasville

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. -- The Boundary Waters Splash and Dash, a biathlon for young athletes, is coming to Douglas County next month.

The swimming and running event will be held Saturday, Aug. 3 at the Boundary Waters Aquatic Center in Douglasville.

Children ages 7-15 can participate in the competition. Events include:

* Ages 7-10
100-yard swim, 1K run

* Ages 11-15
200-yard swim, 2K run

The Splash and Dash is designed to introduce kids to the world of multisport, according to the event's website. Visit peakracingteam.com for more information and to sign up.

The cost is $25 per competitor. All finishers will receive a T-shirt, medal and post-race treats.
