State parks still open despite shutdown

ATLANTA -- The government shutdown has closed a number of national parks and historic sites, but Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites will still be open this weekend.

COMPLETE COVERAGE | Government shutdown

The state parks located on the local Corps of Engineers lakes are open to visitors. They include Don Carter State Park on Lake Lanier in Gainesville; Red Top Mountain State Park on Allatoona Lake in Cartersville;and Tugaloo State Park on Lake Hartwell in Lavonia.

"We've already had a number of campers check into our state parks because they had to leave Corps of Engineers campgrounds which had closed," State Parks Assistant Director Wally Woods said in a statement. "We have plenty of cabins, yurts and campsites available this week."

Other metro Atlanta sites open this weekend include Sweetwater Creek State Park in Lithia Springs, the Etowah Indian Mounds in Cartersville and Chattahoochee Bend State Park in Newnan.
