Search continues for suspect in Douglas Co. attacks

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga -- The search is continuing for a man suspected of attacking three women in three days in Douglas County.

Douglas County Sheriff investigators are warning women to be more aware of their surroundings when they go out to their cars. They also released a sketch of the suspect described by the three victims.

All three incident happened within walking distance of each other and all three victims were getting in or out of their cars when they were approached by the suspect.

"We want to make sure they're vigilant when they get out of their cars and when leaving their houses," said Sgt. John Sweat. "They just need to look around and always be aware of their immediate surroundings."

The first incident happened on September 23 at around 7:00 a.m. at a home on Argyll Lane in Douglasville. Meesha Welch was sitting in her car inside her garage when she looked in her rear view mirror and saw a man creeping up to her car. "That's when he told me I don't want you to scream, I want you out of the car," Welch told 11Alive News.

"Since the key was in it (car) I just turned it on, pushed the window up, put up the lock, and hit the garage button all within seconds," Welch said.

Welch said the suspect fled. "He said 'I want YOU' out of the vehicle so that kind of let me believe that he wanted something else," she said.

About five hours earlier at the Carrington Pointe apartments another woman was approached by a man fitting the same description as Meesha Welch's.

The woman was getting out of her car when the suspect told her not to scream. "He said if you scream I'll stab you, but no weapon was ever shown," Sgt. Sweat said. He said she screamed and the suspect ran off.

Three days earlier, on September 23 at around 2:00 a.m., a woman was attacked as she was getting out of her car in her driveway on Chattanooga Way. "He physically put his hand around her mouth and around her neck and as she fought back with this individual he got up and ran," Sgt. Sweat said.

All three women were able to get away from the suspect by screaming and putting up a fight. Douglas County Sheriff investigators believe the suspect may have been trying to sexually assault the women.

"Within three days we've had three assaults, two on the same morning, which would indicate to me that he's going to continue on until he finds a victim that he'll be able to submissively subdue," Sgt. Sweat said.

The suspect is described as a black male with a dark complexion, in his mid 30's to early 40's, average build, about 5'9"-5'10" tall, with very close cut hair.

Investigators are asking anyone who recognizes the sketch to call Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-TIPS (8477).

Sgt. Sweat said people can also call the Sheriff Office's Major Crime Division at 770-920-7138 or the Sheriff Office tip line at 678-486-1253.
