Magic on Main Street spreads Christmas cheer

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. -- Douglasville will present its Magic on Main Street Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting on Friday, Dec. 7.

The parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. in downtown Douglasville. All parade floats will incorporate lighting, as the event takes place after dark. Prizes will be given to the top three floats.

ATLANTA -- Belk department stores will host their first-ever santafest holiday celebration on Saturday, Dec. 1.

All santafests will be held from noon to 3 p.m.

Highlights include crafts, family-friend activities, Christmas treats and, of course, the chance to meet Santa Claus. Participants can enter a drawing to win a $50 kids wardrobe; three winners will be chosen from each Belk store.

More than 2,000 JROTC cadets from 30 metro Atlanta high schools
to participate in historic fundraising effort

On Saturday, November 3rd and Sunday, November 4th, visitors to metro Atlanta Kroger stores are likely to be met by a smiling, uniformed JROTC cadet with an Empty Stocking Fund logo, as more than 2,000 cadets representing 30 metro Atlanta high schools’ JROTC programs will be working outside metro Kroger stores to raise awareness of and contributions for The Empty Stocking Fund, an Atlanta-based, Atlanta-serving non-profit organization that has been providing holiday gifts to Atlanta’s neediest children since 1926.

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. -- A Georgia children's author will sign copies of her book in Douglas County this weekend.

Vicki M. Fisher, who lives in Douglasville, is the author of Cambio: The Best Blue Butterfly, which encourages children to be themselves.

Fisher will sign copies of Cambio on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the Dog River Library Festival. The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Dog River Library is located at 6100 Ga. Highway 5 in Douglasville.

UWG gearing up for annual Economic Forecast Breakfast

CARROLLTON, Ga. -- It's almost time for the University of West Georgia's annual Economic Forecast Breakfast.

This year's event will be held at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30 in UWG's Campus Center Ballroom. It is sponsored by the Richards College of Business and the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce.

UWG associate professor of economics Dr. William "Joey" Smith plans to give the economic forecast for west Georgia, while BB&T Capital Markets COO John B. Jung Jr. will cover the economy of the United States.

All breakfast attendees will go home with a copy of the 2012 West Georgia Regional Outlook, which provides economic breakdowns for Carroll, Coweta, Douglas, Haralson and Paulding counties.

The cost is $30 per person or $200 for a table of eight. Register no later than Monday, Oct. 22.

Sam's Club offering free diabetes screenings

Sam's Club offering free diabetes screenings

ATLANTA -- Several Sam's Club Pharmacy locations throughout metro Atlanta will offer free diabetes and vision screenings this weekend.

The screenings will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and are valued at more than $150. They include glucose, A1C, vision, blood pressure and BMI tests.

"Knowing the links between risk factors, choices and solutions prepares our members to better manage or even prevent diabetes," Sam's Club Health and Wellness senior VP Jill Turner-Mitchael said in a statement.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say about 1.9 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed every year. If this trend continues, one out of every three U.S. adults will have diabetes by 2050.

Diabetes is also the leading cause of new cases of blindness in U.S. adults, according to the CDC.
