Douglas County honored as 'Camera Ready Community'

ATLANTA -- Douglas is one of 73 Georgia counties to be named a "Camera Ready Community" by Governor Nathan Deal.

The counties will be honored in a ceremony at 10 a.m. on Monday, Mar. 21 at the Georgia State Capitol.

Villa Rica High to Hold Black History Program

VILLA RICA, GA -- The Villa Rica High School community would like to invite all of Metro Atlanta to participate in the first annual Black History Celebration.

The event will be at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 24 at First Baptist Church of Villa Rica (1483 West Highway 78, 30180).

The new Villa Rica High School Gospel Choir, the Thomas Dorsey Singers of Villa Rica, High Praise of Flat Rock Baptist Church and gospel recording artist Earnest Pugh are all scheduled to perform.

Guest speakers include Sylvia C. Hooker, deputy superintendent of the Georgia Department of Education, and The Honorable Former Georgia Supreme Court Justice Leah Ward Sears.

'Life is a Dream' at UWG

CARROLLTON, GA -- The West Georgia Theatre Company presents a remarkable night of entertainment with Life is a Dream: An Evening of Ten-Minute Plays.

The show will run in the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts' Dangle Theatre from Tuesday, Feb. 15 to Saturday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. There will also be 2:30 p.m. matinee performances on Feb. 19 and Sunday, Feb. 20.

Life is a Dream follows the company's bi-annual tradition of producing an assortment of ten-minute plays written by University of West Georgia students and bringing them to life in the black box theater.

The original Life is a Dream, written by Pedro Calderon de la Barca, has inspired all eight of the short plays.

Hunter Park Community Center Now Open

DOUGLASVILLE, GA -- As of Tuesday, Feb. 1, the new Community Center in Hunter Park (8830 Gurley Road, Douglasville, 30134) is open.

Classes at the brand new Community Center officially began last week.

On Mondays and Wednesdays, Karen Flagg leads a Zumba session from 8:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. and a yoga class from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The cost is $60 per month.

An additional Zumba class, also taught by Karen, takes place from 5:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Children's art classes are held on Mondays from 5:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. The sessions are open to children ages five to 13. Jennifer Roe leads the classes, which are $40 per month.

Those with line dancing experience who are interested in sharpening their skills can take an intermediate/advanced class with June Shuman on Wednesdays from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Georgia Senator Encourages Students to Enter Holocaust Contest

ROSWELL, GA -- Georgia Senator John Albers (R-Roswell) recently announced his desire for middle and high school students to enter the annual statewide Holocaust Art and Writing Contest.

Sponsored by the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust in cooperation with the Georgia Department of Education, the contest's theme is "What Are the Lessons of the Holocaust?" The program began in 1995; this is the first year that the contest will include a Music category.

"These contests are a great educational tool that inspires students to take the initiative to learn more about a critical time in our history," said Sen. Albers. "This program is a great example of the kind of creativity our schools need to truly engage students.

'Discover Douglasville!' Photo Contest Begins in February

DOUGLASVILLE, GA -- The Douglasville Convention & Visitors Bureau is holding its first ever photo contest in conjunction with National Tourism Week in May.

"Discover Douglasville!" is open to photographers of all ages and skill levels. The only requirement is that all pictures must be taken in Douglas County. The contest's goal is to showcase Douglasville's best.

Submissions will be taken from Tuesday, Feb. 1 until midnight on Friday, Apr. 29. Online voting will take place during the week of May 2; the winner will be announced during National Tourism Week.

First, second and third place recipients will all receive prizes from the Douglasville CVB.
