ATLANTA -- Verizon’s “How Sweet the Sound” tour returned to Atlanta for the 5th year, Monday, September 10 at Philips Arena. With Grammy award-winning Donald Lawrence as a returning host, alongside Yolanda Adams, the show began with a searing performance by Hezekiah Walker of the hit “Souled Out.”

Judges for the evening included an A-list panel of gospel’s greatest: Cece Winans (Gospel’s ‘best teeth’ according to Yolanda Adams), Hezekiah Walker, Fred Hammond and a solo Erica Campbell of the sister duo Mary Mary - who hinted on the possibility of more future independent projects.

Each of the legendary judges took turns from behind the judging panel, to deliver performances throughout the spirited night of competition and community; which included a collection of no-longer used cell phones for the HopeLine project to support domestic violence victims.

The stars of the night however were the six choirs: Atlanta West Pentecostal, The Voices of Life from Life Center Church, Robert Weaver & The Weaver Chorale, Cedric Sesley and Out For Souls (Nashville,TN.), Anointed Voices of Tabernacle Baptist Church and Dynamic Praise from Alabama’s Oakwood University.

Converged from various cities throughout the Southeast, the choirs sang with joyful fury for a chance at the coveted title of “Best Choir in America,” and up to $50,000 in prizes during the national finale. The multi-ethnic Atlanta West Pentecostal Church took home both $5,000 for the People’s Choice award, a selection based on fan voting by text-message. and the regional grand prize of $10,000.

Verizon’s “How Sweet the Sound” finale will take place on November 4, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
